Janice…
All I can say is WOW! Extremely nice layouts, awesome graphics and great articles. No matter how many times I come here, I am still impressed by the very professional appearance. Congratulations on a job well done….

Do you have a favorite prenatal yoga DVD? I’ve been doing hot yoga for over a year. I started with Bikram, then Baptiste and now your Prana studio in Cambridge. I just found out I’m pregnant last week! I’m afraid to go in the hot room yoga now but I am looking for a prenatal yoga DVD that is challenging enough for me. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Congratulations Super-mom Carmen!!
That’s wonderful news.
In my opinion, it is totally fine to practice Prana Power Yoga in a heated studio when you are pregnant, as long as you’ve practiced in the heat for at least a year, which you have.
I practiced and taught in our hot studio till the day I delivered and I felt great and my babies were happy and healthy and so calm and grounded from day one!!
Your practice is a gift you give to your baby.
This said, however, the most important thing is to listen to your body and to your intuition, because it is always right on.
So if your intuition is saying “no,” then no it is.
In that case, you can use my Prana Power Yoga DVD to practice for the next ten months.
I honestly have never found a prenatal Yoga DVD that I’ve liked and that I therefore feel comfortable recommending.
I am eventually going to make one of my own.
When you practice to the Prana Power Yoga DVD, modify when needed, for example, on twists.
Here is a list of my pregnancy no-no’s during practice that may help to guide you in your practice during your pregnancy:
Super-mom Taylor’s
Prana Power Yoga Flow
No-No’s During Pregnancy:
1. DO NOT practice Prana Power Yoga IN THE HEAT if you have not practiced power yoga in heat for at least one year.
2. No abs (yes, even during first trimester).
3. No lying on your belly poses.
4. No inversions (this is debatable, so see how you feel…I felt good doing inversions with my third child, so try and see. There are some great benefits from inversions if your body and baby like them).
5. Modify twists so that they are gentle . . . using a block and changing the hand position gradually.
6. Modify plank as needed as the pregnancy progresses (i.e. bring your knees down to the mat).
7. Modify upward dog (knees and/or thighs resting on the mat as needed . . . and eventually in the third trimester perhaps skip it all together).
8. No lying on your back—especially in second and third trimesters (you will know when this is a no-no) . . . it’s when the baby is heavy enough to cut off blood circulation to the heart).
9. No straddle leg split, because your ligaments are so loose during pregnancy that you may/probably will push too far (ouch!!).
10. Also because of loose ligaments, frog should be taken with great care, and perhaps skipped altogether when the belly has gotten quite big (I have skipped it in my third trimester . . . some women may want to take an alternate pose starting in their second trimester). So there are two issues here . . . one is the ligament situation and the other is the size of the belly).
11. No wheel (this contradicts Bikram; however, it did not work for me for two of my three pregnancies. If you feel you want to take wheel and are following your intuition, it’s OK; however, please be mindful).
12. Modify your foot position in utkatasana and tadasana as the pregnancy progresses so your feet are wider apart (i.e., as the belly grows, it is literally impossible to keep your big toes and heels together).
13. It is sometimes helpful—especially during the third trimester when the belly is huge—to take uttanasana instead of rag doll. or perhaps do a little of each, as feels right.
14. Because of taut hamstrings (see #16) and just the sheer size of the belly, it is better as the belly gets bigger (second and third trimester) to skip padahastasana and do padagustasana twice instead.
15. FYI on arm balances: i was OK doing crow and tripod (NOT HEADSTAND) until later in my second trimester when my belly just made it impossible for me to get into the pose!!
16. FYI on hamstrings: a woman’s hamstrings get much more taut during pregnancy—especially during the third trimester when the belly is huge and the weight of the belly is pulling her forward.
what to do instead when you are not doing some poses that others are doing during the Prana Power Yoga flow??
Here are some ideas; however, you should do what you feel like doing as modification poses . . . you really know what to do if you ask yourself.
1. parsvatonasana
2. reach your right arm forward and left leg back series w/o the half bow
3. cat tilts
4. more down dog
5. camel
6. child’s pose
7. badakonasana
8. janusirsasana
9. squat
10. happy baby gently rocking (so as to not be flat on back—especially during third trimester
11. lie on the left side for savasana and/or to rest—with a block in between the knees or calves
12. padagustasana instead of padahastasana
general info:
** pregnant students (and all students!!) should stay well hydrated
** heart rate should not exceed 140 (or thereabouts)
** body temperature should not exceed 101°F
** REST WHEN THE BODY SAYS TO. LISTEN TO THE BABY—
NOT THE EGO!!
So hopefully this information is helpful Carmen.
Enjoy this beautiful and magical time, Super-mom!!
Have the best day ever!!
Namaste!!

Great info!
I wish I learned about this website while I was pregnant.
I just had a baby girl on July 18th, 2008 and I was searching for information regarding yoga during pregnancy. I found very little information and many teachers did not feel comfortable guiding me in my yoga practice.
A yoga video would have been great!!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge – I will pass it on.
Namaste -

Dear Super-mom Maria,
CONGRATULATIONS!!
So glad you found Super-mom.com now.
Happy almost 8 month birthday to your daughter!!
My intention is to create the best yoga DVD ever in the next year, which will include both a practice for all levels practitioners and also pregnant practitioners.
My vision is to have my husband and I practice next to each other, and I do the pregnancy modifications. My vision is also that I am 6 months pregnant when we film.
We’re workin on that!!
Have the best day ever!!
Namaste!!

Love it!!! I’m excited for both of you and can’t wait to see the video & hopefully the baby too! I’ll be one of your best customers – what better gift for an expecting mom!!! We all know how we become overburdened with toys & clothes for the new baby – - I love giving gifts to the mom instead!
I’m taking the yoga class this Saturday at 11:00 in Winchester so that my daughter Sabrina can take the kids class at the same time – this will work out great for us. We can’t wait!! Hopefully our new baby Isabella will join us one day – -
Thank you for all your gifts -
Namaste!!

Thanks Super-mom Maria.
Congratulations on Isabella!!
I’m so glad you are partaking in the new kids-n-Super-parent concurrent classes in Winchester (and now Cambridge, starting April 1st!!).
I am so excited to offer this to Super-parents and Super-caregivers.
Especially during the 4:00 hour (during the week) which can be so challenging for many Super-caregivers (as of April 1st we will offer it Tues-Friday at 4pm in Winchester).
Now instead of reaching for the Ben n Jerry’s (or worse), people can pile the kids in the car and head over to Prana for YOGA at four and then a divine evening to follow.
Have the best day ever!!
Namaste!!

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

The supermom is a cultural cover up that tells women to accept a dual responsibility that men do not have to carry. Go into the work place, empower yourself, but also carry this child and do all the housework. Don’t make your husband change for the sake of your independence. I wonder who thinks this is fair? Are you women supermom’s because you love it or because you have been pushed into it? Because you wanted both a career and a family but found no support? So you just do it all? I don’t know…

I have a different truth than this but everyone has their own truth and it’s all good!
We all vibrate at different vibrations and like attracts like.
My website and blog is dedicated to supporting, inspiring, and providing community for all Super-people on this planet–not just parents.
In fact about 1/4 of my readers are not parents.
I believe that we are ALL Super-people as we do our best with breath and walk our path. Not being perfect, not abiding by anyone else’s standard, but following our own heart and intuition.
And having compassion and forgiveness for ourselves in each moment, knowing that every breath is a chance to begin again.
Words can be funny–and be misunderstood.
But energy cannot.
Read the energy of this site and you will understand what it’s about.
Thanks for your thoughts and
Have the best day ever!
Namaste!

I guess that knowing what you will accept from anything in your life whether it be from your partner, your children or your world as a whole is where you begin…my feeling is that if something is not going right in your world, only you have the power to change it. The thing about change is that it can be hard, scary, totally unpopular. Change at times can and will push you way out of your comfort zone and maybe that is a good thing.
I think that it is a nice idea the whole being “super” thing. I really don’t think that it is a force or an insinuation that you have to be all things at all times with no help whatsoever. To me being super means that I ask for help when I need it, I take a breath and spend some alone time when I need it (even if it is 3 minutes to pee without a little voice yelling questions through the bathroom door), and mostly, I drop the bitter attitude that tells me that my husband has it way easier. If he plays a round of golf, I say rock on big guy! My biggest shift (both in my life and in my marriage) was to learn that it is OK for me to grab that yoga class, or to have coffee with a friend totally free from guilt. The thing about guys is that they have figured this part of life out…it is wiring and yes sometimes partners overstep. But if I ever feel like I am doing way too much and am getting a little bitter then it is up to me to fix that. Sometimes all you need to do is tell someone what you are feeling because they have no idea. If you have tried this and you are still left feeling like you need to be angry at the world or that you are burdened, it is time for an overhaul!
Thanks Taylor for a website where we can find community. I think that sometimes people forget (or their assumptions get in the way) that they need to live in their own worlds and that means being happy for who they are and for what they have NOW….in no way should a person ever compare their life with anyone else’s…what’s the use??? We have to get out there and rock our own worlds!

***Another side note to address Jenna’s question that I had forgotten is that no one can “push” you into anything without your consent (to paraphrase the awesome Eleanor Roosevelt). Knowing this it takes a whole lot of accountability to take charge of your own life and live it in the way that you want to rather than blaming so called societal rules or getting lost in sexual politics. The real deal is that we have to take a long hard look at what is working and what isn’t (which is so very difficult) and make a decision to fix what is broken.
